Hungering for Archery?
April 30, 2012When movies based on popular fiction novels are released there is always a spike in book sales as kids rush to read or re-read them. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins is no exception. Since the highly anticipated release of the blockbuster movie, sales are soaring. But there has also been another unexpected byproduct of the movie’s popularity. Today more kids than ever are interested in archery, the skill the story’s heroine, Katniss Everdeen, has mastered in the film.
Archery is cool once again. Four-time American Olympian Khatuna Lorig actually trained Jennifer Lawrence for her role as Katniss. At the Olympics in London later this year Khatuna is a serious contender for the gold medal. Kids everywhere will be watching and maybe practicing with bows and arrows of their own.
Archery centers can be found all over the country and it’s likely there is one near you! Most programs offer classes for children as young as 5 years old and provide their equipment, too. Forget the video game console version. Get out and try the real thing.
For more information and to find a center near you, check out the Junior Olympic Archery Development program.
